Unveiling the Key Elements of a Tech Pack for Fashion Designers

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

"Tech pack knowledge is crucial for fashion design students as it enables effective communication with manufacturers, ensures product quality and accuracy, and reduces production time and costs. It also helps to bring the designer's vision to life while meeting customer expectations" Says Prof Gaurav Mandal.

In the fashion industry, a tech pack (also known as a technical specification sheet or design specification sheet) is a document that outlines all the technical details and requirements of a garment. Tech packs are used to communicate design specifications between the designer and manufacturer to ensure that the final product meets the desired quality and design standards. The different parts of a tech pack typically include:

  • Design Sketch: A technical drawing or sketch of the garment, which includes all the details of the design.

  • Bill of Materials: A list of all the materials needed for the garment, including the type, color, and quantity of each.

  • Fabric Details: A detailed description of the fabric, including the composition, weight, and width.

  • Trim Details: A list of all the trims and accessories needed for the garment, such as buttons, zippers, labels, and hang tags.

  • Size Specification: A measurement chart that includes the dimensions for each size of the garment.

  • Construction Details: A step-by-step breakdown of how the garment is to be constructed, including the stitching and finishing techniques.

  • Packaging Details: Information on how the garment should be packaged, including the type of packaging, the quantity per carton, and any special labeling requirements.

  • Quality Standards: A set of quality control standards that the manufacturer must meet in order to ensure the final product meets the desired quality and design standards.

Overall, a tech pack is an essential tool in the fashion industry to ensure that a garment is produced to the desired quality and design specifications.
